The cloud-shaped storm glass with beechwood base is a beautiful ornament and a modern interpretation of the chemical weather glass, also known as "FitzRoy's storm barometer". Nowadays it is more a charming curiosity than an exact weather station but in the 18th century, it was widely employed by sailors to predict the changes of weather conditions. It was especially promoted by Admiral Robert FitzRoy and used during his voyage as a meteorologist with Charles Darwin on the HMS Beagle as a way to forecast oncoming storms. This historical device responds to atmospheric fluctuations. It works indoors and outdoors too. It is best placed on a desk, mantelpiece, shelf or a windowsill.
